Acura can be an upscale automaker known for offering vehicles with impressive degrees of luxury, performance and features. It’s come quite a distance very quickly, however, as the annals of Acura is simple relatively. Parent company Honda introduced the Acura brand to the U.S. market in 1986 in order to create another luxury division because of its products. Initially, it was simply a two-car show: the Story sedan, that was the first true Japanese luxury executive car sold in the us, and the Integra sport sedan and coupe.
Though essentially a marketing creation for the UNITED STATES market, the Acura brand was successful immediately. Consumers liked the features, performance and upscale image of Acura cars, combined with the idea that Acuras were backed by Honda’s reputation for reliability and low ownership costs. In 1991, Acura launched its crown jewel: the all-aluminum NSX sports vehicle, which offered performance near that of other incredible vehicles while undercutting them in cost.
As Acura’s products grew in the 1990s, however, the business battled a little. A few of its products were duds, and it risked alienating devoted customers when it substituted the Integra and Story labels with alphanumeric designations. The ongoing company jumped on the hot luxury SUV bandwagon in the mid-’90s with the SLX. Unfortunately, the SLX was a rebadged version of an Isuzu SUV just, and its own quality didn’t match customers’ expectations.
For the new millennium, Acura revamped its product range. An all-new SUV called the MDX debuted, having numerous family-friendly features, including a third-row chair. The Integra was changed with the RSX sport coupe, and an all-new entry-level sport sedan called the TSX was released after that. A total redesign of its most popular model, the midsize TL sedan, used, as performed a redesign of its flagship RL luxury sedan.
By mid-decade the NSX was absent, but Acura done its model lineup with the street-performance-oriented RDX small crossover, the TSX wagon and the ZDX, a fastback-styled crossover that put unique styling over practicality. Today Acura continues to be looking for its ideal niche market but there is no denying the grade of Acura’s vehicles, nor their interesting mixture of performance, value and technology.
